Finally got some Mast brothers chocolate in my hands and discovered their factory in Williamsburg
As I admitted for MamanNYC‘s beautiful cups, I have to admit it for Mast Brothers’. The real reason for my wanting to go to this specific place in Williamsburg in January was simply because of the beautiful paper packaging around the chocolate. Granted, they are beautifully designed and presented. Thick paper, so simple, yet so effective. I love it and haven’t gotten bored with it since I saw it the first time. I was surprised to see that the everything remains handmade. The labels are (very neatly) glued on top of the paper (as opposed to printed). In spite of the brand’s success, the fabricating process remains authentic and loyal to the beginnings.
The Brooklyn flagship is actually not a café like I imagined but a real factory where you can see the brothers’ friends wrapping the chocolate. The venue is gorgeous with white tiles on the walls as an alternative to the brown stone bricks. Wooden floors and tables. It almost felt like being in a luxury store but with no clothes, just chocolate. All very neat.
If you go further down 3rd street, you will reach the Mast Brothers brew bar where you can have a cup of real hot chocolate. The atmosphere is extremely minimalist with white painted bricks on the wall, a glass window separating the inside from the street and elevated tables installed in the back so you have some intimacy.
A brand new store has just opened in London this February, if this is closer to you. It’s in Shoreditch (on 19-29 Redchurch street).

Comme je l’ai avoué pour MamanNYC, je dois l’avouer pour Mast Brothers. La vraie raison pour laquelle je voulais absolument me rendre à cette adresse dans Williamsburg en janvier, était simplement le beau packaging qui entoure ces tablettes de chocolat. C’est vrai que c’est un très beau design et c’est bien présenté. Du papier épais, si simple et pourtant avec un fort impact. J’adore et ne m’en lasse pas depuis la première fois que je l’ai vu. J’étais surprise de voir que tout reste fait main, que les étiquettes sont (très proprement) collées sur le papier à motifs (et non imprimés). Malgré le succès de la marque, l’authenticité de son mode fabrication parait fidèle à ses débuts.
Le flagship à Brooklyn n’est en fait pas un café, mais simplement la fabrique authentique où l’on voit les amis des frères Mast emballer le chocolat. La boutique est magnifique avec des carreaux blanc au mur en alternance avec les briques marrons. Le sol et les tables sont en bois. On avait presque l’impression d’être dans une boutique de luxe sans vêtements, juste du chocolat. Très clean.
Si vous descendez plus bas sur la 3rd street, vous arrivez au bar des Mast Brothers. Là, on vous sert du vrai chocolat chaud. L’atmosphère est très minimaliste avec des briques peintes en blanc au mur, une baie vitrée séparant l’intérieur de la rue et des tables élevées installées dans « l’arrière boutique » pour avoir un peu d’intimité.
Une toute nouvelle boutique vient d’ouvrir à Londres en février, si cela est plus proche de chez vous. C’est dans le Shoreditch (19-29 Redchurch street).
